2010 - Jackson, Mississippi
John M. Perkins Foundation

In June
2010, MVCC sent a team of 21 members to Jackson, MS helping with the
John M. Perkins Foundation.
The
Perkins Foundation is committed to helping the people in Jackson by
community development, being
involved
in discipleship, and promoting racial
reconciliation through the gospel of Jesus Christ. The ministry
was
began in 1960 by Dr. John M. Perkins, who sought to reach the community
through Bible teaching and
demonstrating
the love of Christ. Later, Dr. Perkins was a part of the civil
rights movement in Mississippi.
Today,
the Foundation has a campus in the heart of Jackson, along with owning
some area houses in which they
conduct
their ministry among families.
The
mission team spent a week helping the Perkins Foundation in their daily
ministries and tasks. A great deal
of it
involved doing routine maintenance on the grounds and in the ministry
houses. The team also had the
opportunity
to help out with the Foundation's daytime ministry for the neighborhood
children. In the morning,
the
team led chapel with songs, skits, and Bible teaching. In the
afternoon, there were opportunities to play with
and
spend time with the children. Along with assisting the ministry,
there was also a tour highlighting certain
sites
and aspects regarding the civil rights movement which Dr. Perkins was a
part of.
